Busy Summer

Having a much busier summer than I remember last year. Saturday we celebrated Brian's step-brother and sister-in-law's 10th wedding anniversary then went to a bbq.

Next weekend we are celebrating a friend's birthday. The following weekend I head to Florida for my brother's wedding.

In July, we are going to Washington to visit a friend for a week.

Saw Terminator, and it was just ok. I didn't want my money back but it wasn't the best movie I've seen either. Trying to make time to see Drag Me to Hell.

Joined Facebook. I've re-connected with friends I haven't talked to in years, which is great.

Trying to update the bberry OS and it froze my computer. Not looking too good. Hope it didn't screw up my phone.

3-day Weekends

I am taking the next few Fridays off for some relaxation time and spring cleaning.

Summer movies are starting to arrive and I have been looking forward to this year's batch. Last weekend a friend of ours got a big group together to see Wolverine, which was surprisingly good.

On Thursday night a few of us are going to see Star Trek, which has gotten great reviews and scored a 10 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Additional Summer releases from IMDB here.

I am trying to talk Brian into seeing GI Joe with me. Growing up with four brothers resulted in my watching the cartoon growing up (I even had a Scarlett action figure) and would love to see how it turns out on the big screen.

Internet Usage Caps

Time Warner suffered a serious public relations backlash when they announced their plans for Tiered Usage Pricing. According to stopthecap.com, the company is instead cutting off service for customers whose downloads exceed 40 gigabytes per week with no advance notice to the customers and has put off upgrading their infrastructure.

This is an interesting and scary development.

Time Warner is a cable tv provider along with their Roadrunner internet service. As more television content is being delivered over the internet, average internet bandwidth usage is increasing while cable tv usage is decreasing. The company is essentially competing against itself and the cheaper and more convenient option, internet delivery, is winning.

As the internet continues to develop into the standard for content delivery and traditional television wanes, these companies will need to change their models, including pricing, to remain profitable. Don't be naive, we need these companies to be profitable in order to continue to provide services or this whole conversation is moot.

However, cutting service to the heaviest internet users without advance notice is not the appropriate way to achieve this balance. First because these are some of the most loyal internet subscribers and losing their business is a big deal. Second, impacted customers will use the immense power of the internet to voice their displeasure leading to an even greater media backlash.

Finally, this is not only capping internet surfing and video downloading but also creativity and entrepreneurship. We have lost many industries to outsourcing, our auto industry is wheezing, has Time Warner considered the broader and long-term impact of this policy on our economy?

My usage would fall right in with those being impacted in Austin, so I am very interested to see how this plays out.

I prefer internet delivery not just due to cost, I do pay for cable tv, but for the convenience factor. I don't want to schedule my time based on when a particular show is on tv. Internet delivery allows me to watch what I want, when I want to watch it. I also telecommute. Would I pay more to ensure that my service is truly unlimited at an appropriate speed? Probably, but I would also cancel my cable tv.

Music that Makes You Dumb

According to this website, there is a correlation between preferred music and level of intelligence:
Music <=> Colleges <=> Average SAT Scores

Smart people listen to Beethoven, Kelly Clarkson fans are below average, and Lil Wayne fans fall at the very bottom of the intelligence heap.

The results are based on a comparison of the ten most frequent "favorite music" at every college via that college's Network Statistics page on Facebook and the average SAT/ACT score (from CollegeBoard) for students attending every college.

Skipping Spring, Welcome to Summer

When I left for Washington on Thursday the high temp was a comfortable 74. I came back yesterday to 99. I promptly went inside and cranked the ac.

Totally addicted to the RSS reader on my Blackberry Storm, which definitely kept me entertained while stuck in airports this weekend. However, I am beginning to experience some of the response time and hanging issues reported for the Storm. I had to pull the battery today when the device locked while retrieving reviews in the app store. Overall still satisfied.

Also found out I can't add toll-free numbers to my Friends and Family, which is a bummer as my main work number is toll-free and most of my overage issues were work-related calls. Trying a work-around with a local number.
